INSTALLATION ART
Interact, explore, imbibe. A trip to STORYLAND is a trip to another world.

Creative Directors ZAKPAGE

With so much happening in the world, we invite you to leave it behind for a day and travel to the land of stories. For thousands of years, humans have constructed narratives to try and make sense of the world. It is a fundamental part of being us. These stories are expressed in art; from music and dance to sculpture and film and encourage us to gather and share and create an emotional connection to each other. But the place where these stories came from is a magical place far way.

Welcome to STORYLAND.

From the moments the gates are thrown open, you will be fare welled from Gumbaynngirr Country to enter STORYLAND; a world built by light and sound that will immerse you in the mythology of stories and take you back to the place where stories were created. You will discover worlds within worlds; immersive and kinetic sculptures and installations that will surprise and delight. STORYLAND is an adult playground that you can discover with your mates that reignites your memories and will inspire your imagination. To find out the first chapter in the story of STORYLAND, you need to get your passport to this new world. Come and be a part of the story.

ONE SECOND OF FILM
An obelisk stretches 10.5m into the sky in the centre of STORYLAND. Two film strips twist 24 times into a double helix DNA strand, which at dusk comes alive to spin the whole structure, coming to life with laser animation drawing up and down the endlessly spiralling DNA film strip. THE YURT LOCKER
BIZ · DJ BAM · ICE G · PAPA BOOM · COCO VARMA · PSUB · MC FITZROY LEE · featuring SKENG TENG HI FI

STORYLAND features a second music stage, an explosive film-themed DJ tent called The Yurt Locker featuring performances from ethnocyberfunk godfather Coco Varma, veteran Jamaican MC Fitzroy Lee (debuting his new album ‘Nu Roots’ at STORYLAND), reggae, dub and jungle turntablist Papa Boom, drum and bass break beats artist DJ Bam, techno revivalist Biz, Coffs Harbour veteran dance DJ Ice G+, and bass evangeliser PSUB, creator of the Skeng Teng Hifi.

As one of Australia’s pioneer techno DJs Biz has been a key player in the evolution of the techno movement. Few rival his passion for the art form, and his ability to work the dance floor with his soulful, yet tuff grooves is truly a pleasure to experience. He has had the chance to work with some of the world’s greatest techno artists and has been a major inspiration and mentor to a plethora of contemporary Australian artists. As a producer he has released sought after records world wide as the artist Biz and under the alias of Calix, and has been charted by the likes of Derrick May, Laurent Garnier,  Ben Sims and Dave Clarke. He has run three import record stores over the last thirty years and compiled releases for labels such as Detroit’s Submerge and Germany’s Force inc.  Today Biz is still 100% committed to living and breathing the art of djing and production and his addition to the Tronic and Transmat family couldn’t be better timed.

DJ Bam, is a vinyl enthusiast who owns and runs “Beans And Music” record & coffee shop in Coffs Harbour.  He did his first gig in1992 and has been Dj’ing ever since in various clubs bars and the occasional Doof. A lover of Drum and Bass from 1994 and hard core break beats better know as rave in the UK. Best party.

Has been playing in the local area since 1992 aka DJ Sven part of “Groovemeister and Sven” He has put on heaps of nights at different locations and changed over to Ice G+ in 2010.

Ice G has supported many big names that came to Coffs over the years including

Kid Kenobi (Ministry of Sound), Endorphin, John Course (M.O.S.), Groove Terminator, Greg Schiff (New York) tipper to name a few (Brain Fog) to name a few. As well as playing a ton of of Doofs and opened countless night spots sometimes multiple times over the decades.

With the love of most electronica music choices playing mainly progressive house in the past, loves to throw in Drum and Bass and Breaks into the mix nowadays.

Boom for the bass. Pappa Boom delves into sonic frequencies from jungle to dub. SoundSystem Operator, Promoter and DJ in Sydney, has produced and performed events all over Australia and NZ. Love for Reggae and dub, all mixes are fused with the flavour. Getting around with the Foreigndub crew, the heavyweight sound for Reggae, Jungle and Drum n Bass in Australia.

Coco likes to tell sonic stories as diverse as his own musical journey.  Starting out at Street Sounds Records working on the first ever Hip-hop album made outside the USA by Faze One to releasing original UK rave anthems as The Altered State (TAS) on the infamous Profile Records home to Run DMC.  Coco’s live band, Earthtribe, are originators of break-beat, drum’n’bass, jungle, breaks featuring Bollywood and other global sounds alongside fellow ‘Asian Underground’ artists, State of Bengal, Talvin Singh, Nitin Sawhney and Asian Dub Foundation.  Coco’s Sitarfunk and ethnocyberfunk movements played Glastonbury, Womad, The Big Chill and Tribal Gathering as well as regular residencies at London’s Scala, 333 Club, The End, Shepard’s Bush Empire, Ministry of Sound, and Blue Note.  Growing up in East London with an enviable record collection Coco has played with all the greats from Nile Rodgers to the Prodigy and has produced new works bringing his love of soul, reggae, funk, house, rave, techno, drum’n’bass, breaks and jungle into a new sound – all original – all bass heavy and all live and direct.

Fitzroy emerged on the reggae music scene in the mid 90’s regularly MC’ing on the ‘Ghetto Rock’ sound system in West Negril Jamaica.

Since moving to Australia in 2007 Fitzroy has been sharing his culture and the spirit of roots reggae on his popular radio show ‘Reggae Mixtape’ from the 2NVR radio station based in the Nambucca Valley.

Fitzroy fronted the well-loved Bellingen based reggae band ‘Drama King’ from 2014-2018 who performed at various music festivals around Australia. Fitzroy’s performance style is spirited and spontaneous as he often improvises his sets and likes to feed of the energy of the crowd.

In 2020 Fitzroy released his solo EP entitled ‘More Spirit’ and is set to launch his new album ‘Nu Roots’ at Storyland Festival in 2022. The album is a celebration of the strength of the human spirit. Fitzroy said that ‘’After dealing with the global challenges we have all been faced with in 2021 that it’s important for him to lay down new roots in the new year.”

He hopes that the album uplifts peoples’ spirits so that we can come together and celebrate love and joy and give people a message of hope and unity.

Skeng Teng Hi Fi was born out of the love of bass music.  Owned, operated and built by Shane Kellahan (PSUB) this compact sound system packs a heavy bass punch. While helping restore a waterlogged Foreign Dub Sound System, Shane was inspired to build his own sound and contribute to Australian bass culture. Hailing from South West Sydney Skeng Teng has moved to the Mid-North Coast joining Coco Varma in bringing dub, reggae, jungle and dnb sounds to the Coffs Coast.
