Scifi Cinema – At SWIFF’22

SWIFF'22 hosts over 80 unique films, and we're always looking for fun ways to highlight them all - so in this blog series, we'll set the spotlight on films through a set of unique lenses. Today we're shouting out one of the team's favourite genres, and dispelling the belief that sci-fi is all lasers and aliens - well - SOME of it is!

SPACEBALLS

This might be an obvious one, but we’d be remiss to make a blog about sci-fi films and not include the 35th anniversary screening of Mel Brooks’ Star Wars send up Spaceballs – the perfect way to celebrate May the 4th.

With team trivia taking place before the screening hosted by Simon Foster, Director of the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival (perhaps the most qualified man for the job) it’s going to be a fun night.

AFTER BLUE (DIRTY PARADISE)

A love letter to the magic of cinema, through the eyes of Samay, a nine year old movie lover dedicated to proving that film is forever.

STARSHIP TROOPERS

Filmmaker Jane Castle joins us at SWIFF to discuss her exceptionally crafted tribute to trailblazing Aussie cinematographer Lilias Fraser – who is also her mother.

MEMORIA

Welcome to Wakaliwood – where “Africa’s Tarantino” Isaac Nabwana has called cut on his 47th film in 11 years. We reckon cheers will fill the cinema for this one.

TITANE

When one of the Farrelly Brothers (the one with an Oscar!) reckons you’re onto a winner – you’re onto a winner.

The real challenge? Getting as much blood, sex and undead into a PG film as possible.

ROBOCOP

Following his 15+ hour series of film analysis, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, Irish film expert Mark Cousins brings us A New Generation, insightfully turning the focus on more recent productions, and what they have to tell us.

LOVELAND

A deeply personal journey into Australian film history – Ablaze follows Opera singer Tikiri Onus’ as he discovers his grandfather Bill, may have been a trailblazing filmmaker.

EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE

This stranger-than-fiction pop doc explores the most watched television event in America’s history- The Day After: a film depicting the devastating effects of nuclear war in Middle America. Director Jeff Daniels will be hosting a Q&A after the screening, and we’re sure you’ll be left with some burning questions.
